The "Well, Maybe" Technique

Life has a way of giving us lemons. The hardships stresses and pain can leave the sour taste of citrus in our mouths for days, months, or even years. But it’s important when fate gives us sour grapes from the grapevine, to make wine. Now it’s very easy to say this when things are going well, but when times are tough it’s hard to stay grounded. For that reason, I want to tell you a story about a technique that you can carry with you in times of stress, doubt, and uncertainty. It's a technique I use for football, for investing, and life. It's called The "Well, Maybe" Technique.

Once upon a time, there was a farmer that had an incredibly strong and fast horse. It was so strong one day it broke out of its stable and disappeared. Everyone in the town said, “Wow! I can’t believe that happened. You’re so unlucky.”

He replied, “Well, maybe.”

Two weeks passed and the horse returned with two other incredibly fast, strong horses. Everyone in the town said, “Wow! I can’t believe that happened. You’re so lucky.”

He replied, “Well, maybe.”

His only son, who was in the prime of his life, was a great horse trainer and decided to take one of the horses. The horse was uncontrollable even for his son and one day he fell off the horse and snapped his leg in half. Everyone in the town said “Wow! I can’t believe that happened. You’re so unlucky.”

He replied, “Well, maybe.”

A few weeks later news broke out that after many years of tension with a rival nation the country declared they were going to war and all the young men from the town were drafted, but not the farmers son…

If you’re going through something right now that feels like it’s the end of the world ask yourself, will things always be this way?

Well, Maybe...
